Happy Easter!

I saw a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight where he asks children what the meaning of Easter is and their responses were all chocolates, eggs and bunnies. It was really cute, but when it was explained to them what Easter was about, the children definitely had no idea and it made me a little sad. I know we often emphasize the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day, but personally to us, Easter has even more significance and is a vital element of saving faith. As we say hello to spring, we cannot help but often associate spring with Easter. So, with Easter Sunday fast approaching, and amid the  pastel colors, bunny ears, egg hunts and chocolates, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what Easter is really about…

Luke 24

English Standard Version (ESV)

The Resurrection

24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

On the Road to Emmaus

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles[a]from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them,“What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 Andbeginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening andthe day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while heopened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[b] 43 and he took it and ate before them.

44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance and[c] forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension

50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.

Kim & Eddie

I’m probably a bit biased when I say this, but Kim & Eddie’s wedding was one of the funniest weddings I’ve been a part of, which is probably a testament to Kim & Eddie’s great personalities.  Just to point out a few hilarious moments: 1) trying to help a cousin put on individual fake eyelashes 2) tourists surrounding and taking photos of us as the photographer tries to take First Look photos, providing for a very non-intimate and loud moment (which we actually had to redo and pose for), 3) Officiant pronouncing the marriage of Kim & Peter (?!?! – Eddie’s brother… the look on Eddie’s face as he turned towards the guests was AMAZING)… these and so many other moments, made for quite the memorable wedding.  Probably not the way most couples would have envisioned their wedding, but these two took everything with a humor and unique grace that is Kim & Eddie. I love you guys!

Jenny & Mike

There’s such a serenity to blue skies and rolling fields that make the joy of marriage that much more beautiful.  Jenny & Mike chose to have their ceremony at Saint Monica and reception at Saddlerock Ranch, and it was such a beautiful day!  They were both radiant, and looked amazing ~ Jenny in her self-designed wedding dress and Mike looking dashing in his suit.  Look out for our DIY project: wood board using Jenny & Mike’s family photos!

Hannah & Jin

Life can throw so many curve balls ~ There are times when you take them on with grace, and other times when you’re a complete mess.  But in the end, things always seem to work out, and in the case of Hannah & Jin, that’s exactly what happened!  These two had been dating for over a decade, so when Jin popped the question, they were as ready as could be to become husband and wife.  They’d been doing long distance for a while, due to Jin being part of the US Air Force and stationed far away, which made planning a bit difficult.  And then to top it all off, just a couple of months before the wedding they learned there was a chance that Jin might be called out to serve, and the wedding would have to be postponed.  Needless to say, it was an emotional roller coaster for these two ~ Jin was given the call and plans were made with vendors to reschedule for an unknown future date, but then literally 3 weeks before the wedding, Jin was told he would not be leaving!

In the end Hannah and Jin got married as planned, and these two could not have been happier!  Jin was bursting with joy as he saw his bride that day, and the love and support from all their family and friends was so evident.  They showed us so much strength through their faith and love in Christ, and trusted us to support them in prayer and with all the details of their wedding.  We are so happy to see you as Mr. & Mrs!

Jean & Stanley

After the first meeting with Jean & Stanley, the one thing I knew we absolutely had to make sure of was that Stanley got a big slice of cake at his wedding.  When he initially made the request, I laughed it off and thought he was being funny… but then he got real serious.  I learned quickly that Stanley LOVES cake.  Maybe as much as he loves Jean.  Apparently at every wedding he’s been to, Stanley’s been one of the first to get a slice of cake.  At one such wedding, which happened to be only a month or so before he proposed to Jean, Stanley had a slice of cake in one hand and skillfully caught the garter in the other, without even dropping a crumb.  True story.  The picture’s on facebook.

So while this post is obviously about Jean & Stanley’s wedding at the beautiful Vibiana, we also wanted to pay tribute to their love of cake and desserts, made deliciously by Jay’s Catering!

Full of Glee

A few months ago, you met my cousins Jen & Rick, and today you get to meet another cousin of mine, Kim (Rick’s sister) and her perfect match, Eddie!  Kim has always been the funny, quirky cousin, and I’ve always looked up to her for her opinions, free spirit and great sense of style (lots of anthropologie influence!)  I wasn’t sure if there could be a man with just as much spunk and wit as Kim, but lo and behold they found each other, and in a way that only two people with as much character as they have, could have met!

Eddie is from Chicago, but moved out to LA a while back to pursue his acting career.  Kim is from LA but had recently moved back from SF, and was exploring a career in pastry and baking. Around the same time, the GLEE phenomenon had just begun to explode, and a few Gleeky Chicago friends living in LA decided to throw a New Year’s Eve Glee-themed costume party.  Eddie met Kim, and their quirky humor fused into a great big ball of happy energy, bringing us to the present as they plan to forever laugh and grow old together.

These two have brought me so much laughter as I’ve spent more time with them, and it amazes more and more each time to see how God brought Kim & Eddie together to join in holy hilarious happy matrimony.  I’m thrilled to be part of the wedding and look forward to all our family gatherings with these great personalities!

Paris, je t’aime

We’ve known Jenny since elementary school when we were “yay” high… well maybe not Christine, she’s always been the tall one… but that’s besides the point.  She’s always had a quiet and calm demeanor, so who knew that once we all went off to college, Jenny would be immersed into the crazy world of fashion design!  (You’ll get a chance to see her talent showcased on her wedding day!)  And what better place for a chic, fashionable couple to take their engagement photos than in the beautiful city of Paris, France.  Jenny & Mike were planning the trip for a friend’s wedding, found a Parisian photographer (on Craigslist!! ~ oh the world wide web), and the result… awesome photos in one of the most romantic cities in the world!  If only we could have found a way to fit ourselves in their luggage…

Christine & Dean

As we spent time with Christine planning her wedding, it became more and more obvious to us that it was as if we were planning our own!  Christine was so easy-going and trusted us completely, even asking us to design her bridal party florals.  And of course, it was an added benefit that we shared similar styles and a love for all things vintage.  From the Carondelet House, to her wedding dress and the bridesmaids’ gowns, we were in LOVE with every aspect of Christine & Dean’s wedding.
